Being the king of anything ain’t easy, just ask the self proclaimed King Of The South, T.I.. After multi platinum albums, various awards and movie roles you would think the life of a king would be smooth sailing. But court cases and jail time has slowed but not stopped T.I. from doing what he does best, hip hop royalty.
Now that Tip is free once again, he is flooding the streets with new records it seems like week after week and is building a buzz back that reminds me of when I first heard Tip utter the words King Of The South, on his first album, I’m Serious. I2G had the pleasure to catch up with TI briefly to learn more about 2 of those records, I’m Flexin and Pyro, along with where those records might end up, his album and label plans and much more.
One of T.I’s main focus once he touched down was to get back in the groove of making good music. And as Tip explains, quantity and quality are and will be in abundance moving forward with the new music set to drop.
At this point I just want to put out good music. I am really not focused on whether or not this song should be a single or that song be for the clubs or radio, but at the same time I want to make music that has substance and has a purpose. I am already about 75 songs deep into the recording process so we are just going to continue to serve the people and give the fans what they want.
Now with 75 songs ready to go, the average artist would be ready to drop a album, mixtape or both. T.I. sheds light on the purpose of the current records that have been dropping from him recently.
I have flirted around with the idea of doing a album, I have even flirted around with the idea of putting out a mixtape. Just for the simple fact that people seem to think they know my intentions of putting out a song and they automatically think it will be the official single from a album.
Regardless if my music is meant for a album or not, I want to see those records shine, whether it’s on the blogs, internet, the clubs at 1:30, 2:30 in the morning or the radio. That is why I am putting records out right now, to preserve the foundation.
T.I.’s label, Grand Hustle, really came into its own over the past year or so. B.O.B.’s album The Adventures Of Bobby Ray, is now certified gold and enjoyed multi-platinum success with the single Airplanes. Now moving forward as we get set to embark on 2012, Tip gives us a preview of what is to come from the roster, including a monster collabo album.
Well you know we have my joint project coming with B.O.B., The Man And The Martian coming soon. Young Dro has a album right now that he is currently working on, it’s almost finished so we should be announcing a date for that soon. But yeah as a label we are just kicking down doors and allowing others to come on in so yeah we are always open to checking out new talent and building on the current talent we have.
I have been happy with the distribution deals that we have had for the label and I am definitely looking to drop alot of projects in 2012.
One of the first things you associate T.I. and hip hop with is Trap Musik. Whether it is the style of music from the south that he has helped bring to the forefront or the album of the same title, many of which deem still to this day is T.I.’s best album to date. It is evident and clear that fans and T.I. alike feel most in their element when Tip is in Trap Musik mode as he talks about here.
Well Trap Musik is for the fans. Those are my original fans, since day one and I can always go a different direction with my music. I have songs right now that some might consider more mainstream or pop so to speak but overall it does not represent the masses though. Those records do not represent the majority of my fanbase and what they have grown accustomed to hearing from me.
I just wanted to take it back to the streets with this Pyro record and let the true T.I. fans and fans of that Trap Musik know that I ain’t went nowhere.
Another association people have with T.I. is his amazing chemistry with DJ Toomp. With all of the new records that T.I. has been dropping we discuss the odds of Toomp produced banger coming soon from the duo.
Yeah I did couple records with Toomp already, just got to lay the verses for them but yeah me and Toomp always working on something.
One of my personal favorites of the new tracks T.I. has released is I’m Flexin featuring Big K.R.I.T.. T.I. gives us some insight as to how that record came together with K.R.I.T. and the video as well.
Well that was one of the first records that I did after I got out. I knocked out 4 or 5 records and it was not until I had finished the record that I found out K.R.I.T. produced the record. It took a while before I heard back about the track and I reached out to him at a video shoot he had with Bun B.
The track turned out dope so we decided to shoot a video for it. K.R.I.T. to me is one of the artists from the south that is next to really do some big things in the near future.
As T.I.’s current records, Hear Ye Hear Ye and Pyro make the rounds on your favorite blogs, radio stations or podcasts, know that the king is back and is ready to make another long reign on the throne.
