I2G chilled with Mahalia, lead singer of NexCyx, for a exclusive interview. We discuss the origin of the group, their new EP, and much more so check it out.
Illuminati 2G is here with NexCyx, how’s it going?
Things are going alright…New York is getting too chilly!
How did you get your start in music and who are some of your musical influences?
I started out at school and church, and I sang in a choir for a short while. Lauryn Hill and the Black Eyed Peas definitely influence me musically.
What is the music scene like in Barbados where you all are from?
We have several live bands across the genres at home. We also get lots of Top 40 stuff from the U.S. so we’re up to date! [laughs] And around our festival time, which is June to August, we get mostly our indigenous music (Soca/Calypso) on the radio.
You recently dropped your video for “Queen,” which is from the EP of the same name. Tell me a little bit how that video came together for you.
It was a cool thing to experience. I had lots of fun, but it was lots of work too. I was happy in the end ’cause we got to show off Barbados, have a great time and introduce the band to the world all at the same time.
What are your thoughts on the music industry in 2011?
I thinks it’s very unpredictable and it can surprise you at any minute!
Do you have any upcoming shows or tour dates?
We recently played at Xavier College in Ohio, and we are working on more dates. We’ll have new schedules up on our Facebook page soon!

We’ve been working on an official site, but it isn’t quite ready. They’re a few details to be ironed out with our merch store, and we’ll launch it when we’re able to let the fans purchase cd’s, t-shirts and other items.
