After releasing their debut EP Queen in early 2011, five-member Barbadian band NexCyx took on live performances, recording and videos in an effort to reach a broader audience.
As a result of their hard work, on Sunday, December 18, NexCyx took home “Band of the Year” honors at the 2011 Barbados Music Awards.
NexCyx produced a glossy 52811 promotional concert in May, and debuted their video for the Queen title track in September. They are currently in process of recording their full-length album, and will be a featured act at the Bequia Music Festival on January 28, 2012.
Together, lead singer Mahalia, producer/keyboardist André, lead guitarist Russell Padmore, bassist Kris Clarke and percussionist Chad are all striving to push the NexCyx sound to new heights. Receiving “Band of the Year” accolades from Barbados is truly exciting, and they anticipate even more opportunities as their upcoming album progresses.
“It is a very big surprise and honour to win Band of the Year at the BMAs,” says Russell, “especially with the amount of talent and work that the other nominees have shown all year. We feel very grateful, and I know we are looking to work even harder to live up to the award and we aim to win It next year as well!”
Mahalia echoes the sentiment: “It’s always a great feeling to be acknowledged for the hard work you do. We’re happy that we can say we have an achievement on the level of people we are inspired by, such as Shontelle and Rihanna.”
NexCyx recently redesigned their website, and have made an array of photos and videos available for curious music fans.
