YNG Martyr fuses his authentic, unfiltered flow with the raunchy, playful energy of the original, transforming it into a gritty, high-octane trap record with Detroit-style drums and his signature experimental edge.
“Me and my producer, Tate had been in the studio for hours trying to flip a nostalgic childhood hit into something gritty with Detroit drums,” YNG Martyr explains. “We took a break, went for a walk to 7-Eleven in LA, and as soon as the doors slid open, “Milkshake” by Kelis starts playing. We just looked at each other like, ‘Yeah, that’s the one.’ The whole song from there was basically a freestyle, just me locking in and letting it all spill out. That’s what makes “MILKSHAKES” feel so raw.”
Raised in Townsville, Queensland, where the music scene was virtually nonexistent, YNG Martyr built his career by looking outward. “I learnt very early on that I wouldn’t be able to make a dent locally, so I built most of my fanbase overseas in the US and Europe,” he says. His genre-blurring sound — a fusion of jerk, rage, and new wave experimental rap with boom-bap lyricism — draws from artists like Mac Miller and Earl Sweatshirt, who he cites as major lyrical influences.
YNG’s impressive resume includes international tours with Iann Dior and DC the Don, and performances at Spilt Milk, Falls Festival, and SXSW, along with shows across the UK, EU, and US. Beyond his own catalog, he’s expanded into writing and collaboration, most notably penning “Still Humble” for WWE superstar Logan Paul, now one of wrestling’s most recognizable entrance themes.
“I love WWE. I watched it as a kid — I grew up on D-Generation X and Triple H,” YNG adds. “That collab was full-circle for me.”
With “MILKSHAKES,” YNG Martyr reclaims a nostalgic pop classic and flips it into something entirely his own — a gritty, infectious, and proudly unorthodox anthem that proves once again why he’s one of the most compelling and rising figures in the underground rap scene today.
