Today, Chicago rapper Munna Ikee releases “Oh Brother,” a stirringly reflective new single from his forthcoming album, Hope In My Hood Vol 1. As thoughtful as it is piercing, it comes accompanied with an equally striking view video. You can stream “Oh Brother” here. You can watch the video for it here.

For the track itself, Ikee swirls tales of trench trauma with a ghostly atmospheric soundscape. Rendered through a weary melody, it sounds like a seance for fallen homies. “Oh, brother, do you hear my cry?/Brother, I’m still toting my fire.” Featuring shots of Munna Ikee digging graves with his crew, the video evokes the same emotional intensity. It’s about the past as much as it is the present, as Ikee wrestles with both previous block battles, the pressures of fame and building something his whole neighborhood can believe in.It’s a throughline for a South Side native determined to give hope to his city. It’s an idea stitched into the fabric of Hope in My Hood Vol 1.

Set for release next month, Ikee’s latest is further evidence of a flow dexterity, melodic instinct, and songwriting craft that have made him a proper successor to local acts like G Herbo, King Von and others carrying the Chicago tradition. It’s a combination that fans have loved since he emotionally raw singles like “Letter 2 Zell” in 2021. Over time, his songwriting has grown more potent. More human. But the core tenants — honesty, integrity, and uninhibited feeling — remain. It’s an artistic ID that is now more necessary than ever before. It also goes beyond the music. Facing a history of war between his native O’Block and other communities, Ikee has ventured into enemy territories to repair relationships damaged by years of violence. In the shadow of death, incarcerations, and unfulfilled promises, Ikee is a glowing emblem for a hopeful future.
