Illuminati 2G is here with Lil Flip how’s it going?
I’m alright bro how you doing?
Good. Tell me a little bit about how you hooked up with John Silva and did the Respect Me album with Hi Powered Entertainment.
I had met John through Crooked I.Crooked is from the west. He linked us up and everything has been going super smooth. We got alot of things that we are working on. I like doing business with straight up people.
How would you say this album differs from your previous releases that you had out?
Well with Respect Me, see alot of people do mixtapes over other peoples beats. What I wanted to do before I dropped my Ahead Of My Time album was put out alot of mixtapes. But I also wanted to put out some records. You know how people call it the album before the album?
Right
It is all original beats so these records are real records. People call them mixtapes but I call them real albums. With this project and the Return Of The #1 Drop Boy, it is just to show people that the south and Houston do not just rap about candy paint and grills.
Tell me a little bit about the album. What can the fans expect from the album on the 29th of this month?
More maturity, more aggressiveness. We got C-Bo on the record, I got my artist Eden. She is Korean and she sings in English and Korean. She is on the project. I got Bobby Moon on the project, and we got the singer J Townsend on the project.
Do you have any future plans to work with John Silva and Hi Powered Entertainment on any future projects?
Yeah we got alot of things we are working on man. We are going to have a lil tour centered around this project, shooting videos for at least 3 of the records, and like I said he is a straight up dude. That is the kind of people that I like to deal with, people that keep they word. We are going to do alot of stuff together.
Your career has gone full circle with you doing your indie grind at the beginning of your career. Then being on a major and reaching superstar status on a major. Now it seems like you have come back completely full circle and you are back doing the indie projects. How does it feel to have that creative control back to do anything that you want creatively with your music?
The good thing about my contracts was that it was it there when I signed. With the major labels, I always had creative control. They could say oh we do not like that but at the end of the day it was my decision. Now as far as me saying everything that I want to say and as far as how I want my album marketed, it is better. I can speak for myself and I don’t have to worry about relationships with DJs and program directors or the magazine people. Because now I deal with them hands on, well I actually dealt with most of them hands on anyways. So really it is just me doing what I do anyways. I never stopped, even when I was down with Sony and Warner, I had my own publicist and radio team, had my own street team outside from the label.
I pressed up my own t-shirts. If the label was taking too long, I would do them myself. They taking too long to press up singles, I would get my own pressing machine. I do not wait for nobody.
You had mentioned earlier the album, Ahead Of My Time, dropping in December. What is up next now that Respect Me is done? You have any more mixtapes or anything betwween now and December?
Yeah I am going to drop Ahead Of My Time towards the end of December. That way I will have some Christmas money. Normally if I do not drop a album in December I do it around March. Respect Me will drop this month so between now and December we will be doing tours, shows for Respect Me, Return Of The #1 Flyboy and Ahead Of My Time and the tour all in these next 3 months.
Do you have any shows or tour dates already set up for that? Do you have any dates that you can announce or tell the people or are you still in the beginning stages of putting that together?
Yeah we actually have all of the towns. The first tour will be a Texas tour, that will be 15 or 20 cities. November and December will be other states and that will be also when I am promoting my Ahead Of My Time album as well. We will set Texas on fire before we even go to the rest of the country. So I can do a show and make 200,000 in Texas alone, so that is what we are going to go do.
What are your thoughts on the music scene and the hip hop scene in Houston, Texas right now?
Everybody is pretty much independent. Now with record sales being low, this is when we are going to see only the strong survive. So anybody that was just barely getting by and not putting forth the effort with their music, now this is the time where we get to see who can stand the test of time.
What is your myspace and website information for people looking to check out your music and see what you got going on?
www.myspace.com/lilflip, www.twitter.com/lilflip713, and youtube we got the Clover G TV. We put up freestyles in the grocery store or whatever I want to put up for the fans, that is what I do.
Ok well that is all the questions that I have for you, appreciate you getting down for the interview. Is there any last words or shoutouts you want to get out there to the people?
Just let them know Return Of The #1 Flyboy in stores now, Respect Me in stores September 29th, Ahead Of My Time in December. Movies coming, videos coming, the Kim Kardashian video coming and the #1 Flyboy, we shooting a video for that also. And my liquor, Lucky Nites, it will be in stores. Rest in peace to Pimp C, Michael Jackson, and DJ Screw.
Appreciate the interview.
Ok man.
