| Chicago’s Philmore Greene is proving to be one of the most determined rappers in the game.
Philmore Greene first started working with Mello with his collaborative album Cost of Living with Apollo Brown. The record introduced boom bap heads to Philmore’s smooth, laid back Westside of Chicago flow. Then in late 2024 Philly debuted his solo Mello album The Grand Design – a sixteen track blend of storytelling, braggadocio, wisdom and street soul. The music and sound sits at home amongst the records we came up listening to from Nature, AZ, Cormega – or with his current contemporaries Boldy James, Vic Spencer, or Ty Farris.
Philmore’s newest album features only a select few rappers including RJ Payne, Rashid Hadee, UFO Fev, and Bruiser Wolf – all of which produce some of the most unique flows in all modern Hip-Hop. Apollo Brownproduced the orginal version of Ghetto Babies, bringing a slow, emotion driven piano piece of that was pure beauty to go alongside the one of a kind Bruiser Wolf (who is something like an entirely unique Detroit version of Suga Free in terms of flow).
After sitting with the record over the start of 2025, Ghetto Babies stood out as worthy of a second run – a Remix worthy. Enter Nicholas Craven, the Montreal based sample producer who brings his own brand of minimalist, loop driven, gorgeous Hip-Hop. Craven flipped “Ghetto Babies” for us on some low key, swagger step, late 70s gold, perfect for the 2025 update.
