Houston’s own Paul Wall is back, well he never went anywhere. Whether it’s collab albums or solo like this latest album, Once Upon A Grind, he has stayed consistent. He talks about the current album and his steady work flow.
Well, I kind of just basically stay working every day of the week when I’m not on the road. You know what I’m saying? I come to the studio, I dedicate time, you know what I’m saying?
To work, so whatever producers I’m working with at that time, usually it’s like a handful of producers, so that I get like a certain vibe going. And with this, what I wanted to just provide the message I want to send out wasn’t, you know, you see any of the trophies or any of the jewels or the rings, you know, but it took a lot of work to get to it, you know what I’m saying? So it’s a story, it’s a journey to get to, you know what I’m saying, the end reward that you want.
And one thing that I always step with me is, you know, don’t sacrifice what you want most for what you want right now. A lot of people would throw away what they want most, you know, the blink of an eye is just awful. Whatever win more emotion or whatever they into at the moment, you know what I’m saying?
And you got to really focus and dedicate, you know, and think about what goals you want. You know, me being somebody who’s been in this game for a while, I don’t take it for granted that this still was my dream as a child, it’s still my dream to this day. So I don’t take it for granted or lightly at all.
So, you know, this is something where I really try to, you know, convey certain messages in some of my music, you know, and this is one of the underlying things, you know, it’s definitely gonna be a lot of getting money, it’s definitely gonna be a lot of balling, but, you know, beneath all of that is, you know, it’s a lot of hard work, you know what I’m saying?
Paul talks about his love of the music and how it fuels him.
Well, part of it, like I said, is this is still my dream job, what I prayed hard for every day, and still pray for every single day of my life. Every time I spit a verse before I start writing it, before I lay it, I say a prayer just to bring the best out of it. You know what I’m saying?”
Because when you’re doing it, sometimes you do it for yourself, but when you record it and put it out, it’s to put it for the universe, so you never know how somebody is going to take it and receive it, and you want to be received in the best way. But also, you know what I’m saying, to be able to have my dream job, I never thought I could have this, to be an MC or artist as a job. I thought my job was going to be, my plan B was still like my dream come true, which was to be a DJ and do promotions.
So that was what I really saw myself as having a career doing. So to be an artist is something I really love. So to work with producers I like to work with, you know what I’m saying, or different artists, or my favorite artists, why not?
I’m going to keep doing this, you know what I’m saying, as long as the microphone will turn on, you know what I’m saying, and I’m going to be on this thing recording.
We all got the Ferraro set up, you know what I’m saying, we’re going to pull out every now and then.
Paul talks about upcoming shows and tour dates.
Man, I kind of like just nonstop it, you know what I’m saying, we kind of do it nonstop, we steady get shows added on, added on. We got a variety of things, some of them are at a few festivals like Tacos and Tequila or whatever festival here and there, a little variety of car shows here and there, you know what I’m saying, or whatever car shows here and there. But then also some of them are with a live band, I do a lot with a live band, also, that’s why I got that type of show.
So we got a few of them here and there, this is whatever, you know what I’m saying, but man, our schedule is, we got like 40 days already, you know what I’m saying, and there’s only 52 weeks in a year, so we’re ready to double up now.
Here, he talks about his new single from the album.
This one right here, Run To The Money, it’s me and my boy Young Al. It’s produced by Zuluk and Beat On, GMB Productions, they’re out of Houston, out of H-Town. I’ve done stuff with them for years, you know what I’m saying, they’ve been in the game for a long time, they’ve done stuff with all kinds, with everybody, you know what I’m saying, especially down in Houston, they really hold it down.
Being somebody that I’ve worked with them in the past for so long, but they’re also working with a lot of the current, like the youth, the fresh sound of Houston, so they kind of bring that out of me whenever I get on their tracks, so big shout out to them. Of course, we got a video for it too as well, but it’s called Right To The Money, and I’m saying shout out to my boys, G&B Productions and Young Al.
And finally, Paul talks goes more in depth about shows and having a live band.
We actually do. We got a big show in Fort Worth. They got this place called Billy Bob’s, and we got a big show there really for my birthday.
“It’s where we kind of celebrating it too. So we got the live band with us too. It’s one of the shows we will pull out the live band.
It’s a somewhat different show when you have the live band with you, because the instruments bring out a different feel. Sometimes it’s that two-track don’t. You know what I’m saying?
So just having that track along with the live band, it really just takes it to another level for me for some of them songs. So it’s something we really look forward to doing when we get that opportunity. Shout out to the band for doing that thing.
But yeah, that’s what we’re doing on my birthday. We’re going to Billy Bob’s.
