SKOODA CHOSE INTERVIEW
I2G kicked it with Chi-Town’s Skooda Chose for a interview. We discuss how he got signed by Twista, his mixtape Top 5 Material, his upcoming album and much more.
Check out his new video You Feeling Me on Twista’s Who Got Next compilation
Illuminati 2G is here with Skooda Chose, how’s it going?
What’s up, what’s up Illuminati 2G!
Tell me a little bit about how you got your start in hip hop and some of your musical influences out there.
I was basically in the Chi doing my mixtape thing, grinding it out and one of my mixtapes got into the hands of Twista’s brother. He gave it to Twista and he liked it so he set up a meeting with me and I spit for him backstage. That was when Kamikaze was out so he was popping real hard back then. After he heard me he was like yeah I want to work with you, I am starting a label up. After that it has been a wrap pretty much. As far as my influences, I am influenced by alot of people out of Chicago but I like Nas, Scarface, Snoop, Twista. I feel like I am a mixture of all them in one. Anybody that is dope man, I like lyricists like Big Pun, Big L, people like that.
I interviewed Twista a couple of months ago and he speaks very highly of you. How involved is he in the creative process and the all around development of your music in the studio?
He is there every time we there so whenever I need a feature, he is jumping on it no problem. I get him charged when he gets into the studio, he gets that feeling back when he hears what I am working on. He always wants to hear what I have musically and we are always trying to outdo each other on songs. Friendly competition, it’s all good.
Tell me a little bit about your mixtape that you dropped, Top 5 Material. How did that mixtape come together?
I was basically just trying to reintroduce myself to people and show what it is. I signed with GMG (Get Money Gang) and I just wanted to come out hard. I had DJ Green Lantern host it, I wanted to do it real big on a national level, so I got a national DJ. I called it Top 5 Material because the title is kind of controversial. People are going to be like man he is calling himself that, and he ain’t even got a album out yet. But when they hear it, people gonna be like man he is cold as hell, it is arguable. Everything is popping with it and I have another one coming real soon, Top 5 Material Part 2, The Savior. It will be dropping any minute now. Be on the lookout for that.
Is it a mixture of unreleased tracks or are you just spitting over industry beats?
It’s both. I have 8 or 9 original joints and 8 industry joints. There are 21 songs on the mixtape.
Tell me a little bit about the single you have out, You Feeling Me, that dropped on the Who Got Next compilation that Twista put out.
Oh man that was the first song I recorded after I got the deal. That song was done like 3 years ago. When I first got in there, that was the first song I did in the studio. It’s crazy the response people are giving to that track being that it is a older track. Cuzzo produced it, he is a in house producer with the label, he also did Whip Game Proper with Twista. Cuzzo did it and I when on it and kept it raw. I really do not even rap the same way as I did on that You Feeling Me joint. I like that raw, gritty, punchline raps that I was coming with on that track. Cold track, check it out on On Demand or YouTube, it is on there as we speak.
Is there any details or anything that you can give about your upcoming album that is coming out on GMG Records?
The album is coming this year and it is going to be crazy. I am working on that right now, alot of producers throwing me beats for the album. I just did a couple of joints that are phenomenal. I can’t wait to drop them, I am about to do something real major with the album. Alot of fire man, it is going to be different. I am about to change the game, it is going to be my Illmatic or my Reasonable Doubt. It is going to be for Chicago, you are going to hear that real Chicago sound that you have never really heard. It is going to be a good thing to see the energy and reaction from people once it drops.
Do you have any side ventures or guest appearances that you are working on outside of the label or any other rappers that you are going to be featured on in 2009 that is coming up that people need to check for?
I have over 30 features. I just did a joint with my man Yazzo he got a deal about to go through, so that single will be out soon. I did a song with the Cool Kids and Twista. I think that song might end up on there album. I know I am going to be on some mixtapes here and there. Man I am everywhere right now, I am like the Chi-Town Wayne. People hear me with these verses and they want to collaborate. It’s all love. Oh and I am going to be on Twista’s album too, Category F-5.
Do you have any upcoming shows or tour dates coming up that you want to let the people know about?
Not off hand. Just be on the lookout, I will be in a city near you pretty soon. If Twista is touring I am with him as well. Be on the lookout, Get Money Gang, Skooda Chose, we coming.
