Slick Rick On His Victory Lap With New Album

Master storyteller and hip hop legend Slick Rick released his latest album, Victory, last month on Nas’ Mass Appeal imprint. The reception has been overwhelming for the album, even some saying it is an album of the year candidate. The ruler talks more about the album and his new single Documents with Nas.

Give us an update on what’s been going on with you.

Um, just put out a new album, Victory, you know, and just enjoying people, feeding people, enjoying watching them having a good time, you know, like that.

Like, how was that experience for you? The London South by Southwest

It was good, you know, you know, hanging out with the English folk, you know what I mean, the English black cats and the white family, you know? So, you know, we’re just spreading the joy, you know, right now we’re the melting pot, you know, so right now we need to, we need to voice our hope and for us to enjoy ourselves in all different ages, you know what I mean?

Yeah. And like, you know, like we’ve all been seeing like some of the stuff that Nas has been doing lately with his career and the spread of longevity. How did you approach this project, bro?

Like, how did you approach it, like, conceptual wise? Like, how did you approach it and go into it?

Well, I got hooked up with Idris, you know what I mean? Idris, we met at a party. We clicked at chemistry.

You know, he saw the potential. He said, you know, let’s make an album. He said, all right.

So went to England, hung out with him, played around with the studio, you know what I mean? Just having fun, you know, like regular people, not even trying to get the money and all that, you know? And just came up with some stuff that we enjoyed together.

And we put out to the market. Let’s see if the market place is like it too, you know? So I’m showing the hunger that’s there, that needs to get fed time, you know?

All right, right. What’s been like the, I guess, some of the feedback that stood out to you the most for the new project?

The feedback has been great, you know? Gives me a good feeling of validation, you know what I mean? You know, just in case if I needed it, you know what I mean?

Like the world has spoken back and said, you know, to join is a problem, you study, like.

Yeah, yeah.

Yeah, like that.

Slick, you are infamous for your storytelling. You birthed a whole generation of storytellers, you both are another generation of storytellers. Like, how does it feel for like that, that to be a part of your legacy and include that into hip hop?

Well, it’s a good description, you know, if someone was to describe who I was, he would say storyteller and humor, and you know, that type of a thing. So yeah, it’s a good description. Pretty much just living my life and showing people how I exist in coexistence with them, you know, like, so like that.

So we, we set a dinner plate for all of us, you know, some people is comedians, some people is storytellers, some people is this, that, you know what I mean, like, like that.

For sure, for sure. Now, talk about, talk about some of the things, and how did you create these? Like, what’s the story behind putting these records together?

Well, we’re pushing the whole album, you know what I mean? That’s why we have a video with it, that goes with a film that goes along with it. So it sets like a vibe.

So we’re like pushing the whole album, like that. The response from the public is the favorite they like is Landlord and Documents, with Nas, shout out to Nas. So yeah, we’re pushing the whole product, because everyone, they’re in all different corners of the place, all crevices, you know?
