The Dirty Sample Interview

Check out our exclusive interview and intro with The Dirty Sample
Life is good. Wake up early, get shit done. Hit the river. Soak in the universe.
How did you come up with the name The Dirty Sample?
Growing up I never had a lot of money for quality records. I was a digger and I never bought full price vinyl. I was always on the hunt. So a lot of my collection isn’t the best quality, but I prefer that. I can find good melodic skips and crackles.
One thing I’ve always loved about hip hop is it doesn’t need to sound clean. I like the grimy. I like the crunch. I’m an analog kid.
You just recently dropped your new beat tape entitled Love Always Wins If You Let It. Tell me a little bit about how the beat tape came together for you.
Life is a ride and aometimes you forget that. It can get serious, but it really isn’t as serious as we all make it out to be. At the core of everything sits love so if you can channel that or find a way to let that win. You will win in life. A lot of people think money, succes etc are the keys to living a good life but I’ve seen that these things can cause problems. You have to do what you love. You have to connect with the universe. Then you’re a successful human.
Do you have any other beat tapes or albums set to drop?
I just dropped 2 Cents with the homey KABOOM! And we are planning a new album for my group Cold Camp. They will release a 90s style mixtape this summer and we have a couple full lengths ready for winter drops. We keep it cold.
I am also working on a new production compilation album that will slowly come together.
Do you have any more upcoming videos or singles?
Videos are going to be shot over the summer. With a couple being prepared for winter as well. I will most likely put together some thing soon for LAWIYLI.
What are your current thoughts on the music industry?
I try not to stay too in tune with the major industry and not let it affect my art but I think it’s convoluted. Musicians who use politics as gimmicks, untalented artists getting major label pushes. I mean it’s been happening forever, but it is getting worse. Doesn’t mean anything though. That’s not my world. I make art for my mind and I am grateful when people like it.
What is currently playing on your playlist musically?
I more of an album guy by here are a few of my last song listens.
Cecile Mclorin Salvant – Ghost Song
Mobb Deep – GOD pt3
NOFX – Linoleum
Big L – MVP
Diamond D – Best Kept Secret
Lone Gone Lonesomes – Endless Sky
Do you have any shows or tour dates?
We are booking right now for winter and we will have a couple shows coming up before hand but no stable dates yet. Hip Hop is odd in our city. It’s tough to get people from all quadrants out to a rap show for some reason. But it will come around. A change is gonna come.
