Some good news to report: Howard University senior Esube “Izzy” Wondwossen has been found safe after a five-day search across the DMV, but as questions swirl about where the 22-year-old was, writers are pushing back against speculation and reminding the public that being found doesn’t mean she owes anyone an explanation.
Per Fox 5 DC, Arlington County police said Wondwossen was located safely and is in good health. Authorities have not disclosed where she was found or released additional details about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
The update comes after Wondwossen was last seen on the morning of Sept. 15.
Her father dropped her off at the Branch Avenue Metro Station in Prince George’s County, Maryland, around 7 a.m. for what he believed would be her usual commute to Howard University.
Wondwossen, however, never made it to campus.
Police later determined that she had been seen at the Pentagon Metro Station in Arlington, Virginia, shortly before 8 a.m. Her sister, Helina Wondwossen, also told local news outlets that Wondwossen was later seen getting off a Metro bus near Reading Avenue and Beauregard Street in Alexandria.
Wondwossen’s family made an urgent public plea for help as days passed without answers about her whereabouts.
“I just want to know she’s safe,” Helina previously told FOX 5 DC, noting that her sister’s disappearance was out of character.
Wondwossen’s mother, Aida Endrias, also previously said that she discovered location tracking on her daughter’s phone appeared to have been turned off.
The Black and Missing Foundation joined efforts to spread awareness about Wondwossen’s disappearance, while police asked the public for information that could help locate the Howard senior.
Now, after five days of uncertainty, her family has the answer they were hoping for: Wondwossen has been found alive and in good health.

While authorities have not disclosed where Wondwossen was during those five days, her safe return has prompted online speculation about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Some writers, however, are pushing back against the idea that Wondwossen owes the public an explanation simply because her disappearance sparked a widespread search.
In a MadameNoireop-ed, writer Thiy Parks arguedthat concern for Wondwossen’s safety should not become an entitlement to the 22-year-old’s private life, particularly as unsubstantiated theories about whether she had gone to meet a romantic or sexual partner began circulating online.
“We can be relieved without being rewarded with the rest of the story,” Parks wrote, adding that whatever conversations need to take place about Wondwossen’s disappearance should primarily remain between her and her family.
As Parks noted, Wondwossen was believed to be in danger, the public helped spread the word, and she was ultimately found alive and well—the outcome everyone was hoping for.
Authorities have not publicly said whether an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Wondwossen’s disappearance remains ongoing.
