The long-running drama between former Love & Marriage: Huntsville stars Melody Shari Rodgers and her ex-husband, Martell Holt, has taken another serious turn. On Sept. 22, Rodgers voluntarily surrendered to authorities at the Madison County Jail in Alabama after a warrant was issued in connection with allegations involving her former husband and co-star. Rodgers was booked on a charge listed as Domestic Violence – 3rd Degree – Harassment. She was booked shortly before 9:30 a.m. and released before 11 a.m., according to WAFF and Fox54 News.
According to information provided to ESSENCE, the warrant was issued in May following an alleged domestic incident the previous month. Rodgers’ publicist said the allegations stemmed from claims of harassment made by Holt. Rodgers maintains that the accusations against her are “false” and has described the charges as “fabricated.”
“I really had to sit with it, I had to allow my children to sit with it and yesterday I said you know what it’s time,” Rodgers told Fox54 News on Tuesday of her case. “So I’m here. I’m here so that the legal process can continue, so I can be vindicated.”
She also alleged that her ex filed the report after she threatened to leave the state in an attempt to “keep her in Alabama for a while.”
Melody Shari Wants Alabama Law Changed
The latest legal development adds another chapter to the complicated and highly public history between Rodgers and Holt. Their marriage, divorce and custody disputes became major storylines during their time on OWN’s Love & Marriage: Huntsville. Rodgers eventually left the series in 2025, but Holt remains on the show, now starring alongside his former mistress-turned girlfriend Arionne Curry, who served as the catalyst for their marriage’s demise.
But now, Rodgers says she wants to turn her latest legal battle into an opportunity for broader change.
Following her surrender, Rodgers revealed that she has been working with Alabama lawmakers on proposed legislation addressing knowingly false reports that result in another person’s arrest.
In a statement to WAFF, Rodgers said the case has motivated her to advocate for stronger protections for people who she believes have been wrongfully targeted.
“I have endured years of harassment that has affected my family, children, and livelihood,” Rodgers said. “While this is traumatizing, I know that it is far bigger than me. This is a national issue because it’s far too easy to get warrants on innocent people. That’s why Senate attorneys have written a new bill based on my situation.”
The proposed legislation has been described as the “Melody Shari Act.” Rodgers says the measure would “prioritize protections for victims of false reports and aims to prosecute perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law.”
Alabama State Sen. Merika Coleman is supporting the legislative effort. Coleman plans to introduce legislation addressing knowingly false reports that lead to another person’s arrest.
Coleman confirmed that she intends to introduce the legislation on the first day of Alabama’s 2027 legislative session, Feb. 2.
“I hate what Ms. Rodgers and her children are experiencing, but I am grateful that she has chosen to use her experience to advocate for change, not only for herself, but for other families who may find themselves in similar circumstances,” Sen. Coleman said in a statement obtained by WAFF.
“This legislation is about accountability. The current draft strengthens Alabama’s false-reporting law by expanding it beyond reports made to law enforcement to include knowingly false reports made to regulatory agencies, professional licensing boards, and the Ethics Commission,” she continued. “It also provides stronger penalties in certain serious cases and recognizes individuals wrongfully named in false reports as victims for purposes of restitution.”
She added:
“I intend for this to be the first piece of legislation I introduce on the first day of the 2027 legislative session, February 2. No one should be able to intentionally misuse governmental or professional processes to harass, harm, or retaliate against another person without meaningful consequences.”
The final language and scope of the proposed legislation could still change as the measure moves through the legislative process.
